About
G-Strong
G-Strong is an organization created by Michael & Erin Sutton in honor of their son Graham to bring awareness and raise money for the St. Jude Research Hospital. The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of the founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay.
What happened?
Our son Graham was a healthy kindergartner in the fall of 2019. One night at dinner we noticed a lump on the side of his neck. After visiting four specialists in ten days it was determined the swollen lymph nodes should be removed to ensure proper diagnosis. Usually these swollen nodes are no problem, but we needed to know for sure.
On Tuesday morning, December 17th, the pathologist confirmed a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and we were told to take Graham home and someone would get ahold of us. The following day we heard from the Springfield affiliate clinic of St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital who asked us how quickly we could arrive at their facility within Mercy Hospital. Once there Graham underwent a CT scan, blood draws, and an ultrasound. By the end of the day we were informed Graham would need to check into the main facility for St. Jude in Memphis, TN.
Thursday, December 19th, we checked Graham into St. Jude and began running more tests. By Friday evening at 7:00 PM we had consulted with the foremost international pediatric lymphoma specialist who would be leading the team to cure Graham.
We arrived in Memphis with four days of clothes in a backpack and would not come home for over four months. St. Jude gave us a furnished apartment, money for groceries, and the best care for Graham of any facility in the world. The goal of St. Jude is to ensure no child dies of cancer, and they do that by removing many of the family obstacles (shelter, food, travel) and allowing parents to focus solely on the job of getting their child healthy.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and it is because of generous people like yourself that the world has a facility like St. Jude to save children from these catastrophic illnesses. The donors who gave to St. Jude prior to Graham’s diagnosis helped pave the way for the research and treatment which saved his life (and changed ours).
Why do we support St. Jude?
To pay forward the care Graham received and the support our family experienced from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital during Graham’s treatment. Graham is now a perfectly healthy fourth grader who loves his buddies, fishing, golfing, skiing, and jumping on the trampoline.
